How to Stick to a Fitness Routine

We all know that exercise is good for us. Staying in shape not only helps boost confidence in bathing suit and tank top season, but is essential in keeping our hearts healthy, our bones strong, and even our minds sharp and our bodies energized. However, with busy schedules and long days, it can be hard to find the motivation to keep up with a fitness routine. Here are some tips to help you find a healthy workout plan that works for you – and then stick with it.

Find the Time that Works Best for You

Some people swear by early morning workouts. Others argue that after work is the perfect time to get sweaty. Another group says that mid-day is the best time for hitting the gym. Who’s right? Well, they all are, to an extent: the best time to work out is whenever works best for you. Everyone’s schedules – and internal clocks – are different. If you’re not a morning person, don’t force yourself to get up while it’s still dark to go for a jog; you’ll only wind up resenting it even more.

Do Something You Enjoy!

Workouts are not one-size-fits-all; for example, while some people love the rhythmic pace of a treadmill (not to mention the ability to watch TV while running in cool air-conditioning), other people find it tedious and boring. The trick is to find something that you actually enjoy doing. This may mean leaving the cardio room behind and heading outdoors to hike, bike ride, swim or play sports, or finding a fitness class that’s fun and just your style. Remember: even something you like can get boring after a while, so don’t be afraid to change it up and keep things fresh!

Grab a Buddy

Studies show that working out with a friend not only makes the experience more enjoyable, but also makes you less likely to skip workouts. One reason is because you will not only be cancelling your own workout, but cancelling plans with a friend. Another reason, however, is because when you make a verbal agreement with someone, you’re more likely to be accountable for following through. So if you can’t find a friend to hit the trail or gym with you, try posting your plans on a social media site or on an online fitness message board to help you stick to your plans.

Set Mini-Goals

Setting small goals for yourself can be a great way to add extra challenge and incentive to your fitness program, especially for those who enjoy a bit of healthy competition! Whether it’s beating your mile time, completing a few extra reps, or holding that tough yoga pose for a little bit longer, having a target to work towards can turn working out into a game.

Reward Yourself

Of course, what would goals be without a reward? Whatever area you’re struggling with, focus on resolving it – and giving yourself a little treat afterwards. Once you set and then meet your goals – maybe hitting the gym when you’d rather stay home, or pushing yourself harder during your workout – reward yourself with a trip to your favorite coffee shop, renting a guilty-pleasure movie, indulging in a long, hot bubble bath, or whatever it is that makes you feel good.
